LEARN Providing Opportunities for Members Through Academic Scholarships Scholarships offer our members relief from the rising cost of education and make it possible for members to access crucial learning opportunities both in and out of the classroom. The Foundation awarded 38 Tri Sigma women $54,600 in academic scholarships in 2023-24 to pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees. Meet Serena Alaniz Alpha Mu "I’m extremely blessed and grateful to receive this scholarship for my senior year. Paying for college over the years has been challenging. I have had to take out loans because my parents are unable to cover the costs due to my mom’s health issues, which prevent her from working. Receiving this scholarship is going to make a significant impact on my ability to afford school, and I cannot thank the donors enough." Meet Sarah Catizone Epsilon Upsilon "Thank you for your kindness, trust, and investment in me and my education. I have and will continue to attempt to be as empowering as all the women in this organization, and to show love and compassion to others in the ways that this organization has shown to me. I am excited for the opportunities that lie ahead, and I will strive to be an ambassador of the values of Tri Sigma in all my future endeavors." Meet Tran Le Epsilon Sigma "As a first-generation Asian American student, your support has not only lessened the financial burden of my education but also empowered me to pursue my dreams with greater confidence and determination. My goal is to enter the nursing field, specializing in labor and delivery or neonatal intensive care. This scholarship has provided me with the financial stability to focus on my studies and leadership roles." Tri Sigma With the help of a matching RPM Grant from the Tri Sigma Foundation, the Alpha Mu Chapter brought 'a little something extra' to young patients at Our Lady of Lourdes Women’s & Children’s Hospital In the heart of Louisiana, a place of hope and healing now boasts an enchanting addition that is already bringing smiles and joy to the faces of the youngest patients at Our Lady of Lourdes Women’s & Children’s Hospital in Lafayette. The recently updated Child Life Playroom is the latest testament to the impact of the Robbie Page Memorial Fund. A partnership between the Our Lady of Lourdes Foundation and the Alpha Mu Chapter at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, plus a matching grant through the Tri Sigma Foundation made the playroom possible. A dedication ceremony for the 300-square-foot space was held in April. The playroom provides a special place for pediatric and PICU patients to participate in therapeutic play, a small oasis of fun and normalcy amidst an often-stressful medical setting. “There is such a healing modality to providing children the opportunity to do things they would be doing at home that they are unable to do while they are in the hospital,” said Laurel Blanchard, Certified Child Life Specialist. “Being able to have this space allows that.” With its vibrant colors and an abundance of toys and games, this space has become a beacon of happiness for the hospital's tiniest patients. It's not just about fun and games; it's a vital component of the healing process. Research shows child life therapy significantly improves the well-being of pediatric patients. According to a study published in Medical News Today, child life interventions reduce anxiety levels in hospitalized children by more than 70 percent. The Alpha Mu Chapter raised funds through their annual chili cook-off, one of the largest annual philanthropic events hosted by a Tri Sigma collegiate chapter. "Our annual chili cook-off has been enjoyed by our community for officially a decade. Our members always enjoy seeing how much our sponsors, teams, and attendees enjoy this event," said Alpha Mu Philanthropy Chair Ashley Graffeo. "Our members take so much pride in knowing our hard work supports causes greater than ourselves." The Tri Sigma Foundation awards grants to local therapeutic play programs nominated by individual members, as well as collegiate and alumnae chapters. Play therapy helps children cope with difficult emotions and experiences. It can also help children feel more comfortable during medical procedures, like getting a shot or having blood drawn. By teaching them relaxation techniques and distracting them with play, they can feel less pain and fear. Since the establishment of the Robbie Page Memorial Fund in 1954, Tri Sigmas have contributed more than $2 million in grants to support our philanthropic initiative Sigma Serves Children. Each year, the Foundation awards local grants to programs nominated by individual Tri Sigmas or alumnae/collegiate chapters. Grants up to $5,000 may be awarded to hospitals and clinics for items such tablets, virtual reality headsets, sensory boxes, books, and interactive play tables. March of Dimes CEO Cindy Rahman (center) with leaders of March of Dimes service partner organizations in Washington, D.C. National Vice President Crystal Jones (center right) represented Tri Sigma. Tri Sigma National Sorority has been named the 2024 Research Partner of the Year by March of Dimes, the leading organization fighting for the health of all moms and babies. This prestigious recognition honors Tri Sigma's outstanding dedication to supporting life-saving research that advances maternal and infant health outcomes. “March of Dimes is proud to be a research-focused organization, funding millions of dollars of original scientific research each year, and it is with immense gratitude that we recognize our National Service Partner, Tri Sigma, as our research partner of the year,” said March of Dimes Community Mobilization Director Michaela Penix. Since 2016, Tri Sigma has partnered with March of Dimes with a shared vision to serve children. Member participation in the March for Babies, advocacy work, and donations made through the Tri Sigma Foundation have helped to further life-saving research that will ensure healthy moms and strong babies for generations to come. March of Dimes' five Prematurity Research Centers serve as the cornerstone of the organization's research program, employing some of the most dedicated and accomplished scientists in the world to work on the most difficult and pressing scientific questions in the field—and most importantly, to find answers that will prevent preterm birth and improve outcomes for mothers and babies. “It was inspiring to meet other national service partners of the March of Dimes and hear how their organizations are involved in this important work,” said Tri Sigma National Vice President Crystal Jones who attended a partner brunch and day of action in March of Dimes’ National Headquarters in Washington, D.C. last month. “It feels good to know we are in this fight together to end preventable maternal and infant death, to discover the causes of preterm birth and to achieve birth equity for all mothers.” As one of March of Dimes' 17 National Service Partners, Tri Sigma joins a distinguished group of organizations, including six National Pan-Hellenic Council fraternities and sororities, Future Business Leaders of America , and Key Club International in the collaborative effort to improve maternal and infant health outcomes nationwide. “From community educational programs to fundraising events, our partners do more than just raise awareness of the organization’s critical mission—they help us save moms and babies through volunteering, fundraising, and advocacy,” Michaela said. Tri Sigmas are encouraged to join the fight for healthy babies and moms in their local communities through a variety of ways: · Participate in a March for Babies near you. · Register for March of Dimes Advocacy Action Alerts . · Volunteer for March of Dimes . · Connect with your local March of Dimes about leadership opportunities .
